A 25-year-old man driving an e-bike died after running into the side of a Butler County Sheriff’s cruiser Tuesday, May 26, in New Castle, according to New Castle police.

Jaycob Heasley was found unresponsive at the scene and was transported to UPMC Jameson Hospital where he died, according to New Castle police Chief David Cumo.

Police said Heasley crashed into a Butler County Sheriff’s cruiser around 6:35 p.m. near the intersection of South Walnut and County Line streets, police said via CRIMEWATCH, a platform law enforcement uses to communicate with the public.

Butler County Sheriff Mike Slupe said the damage to the cruiser was moderate to severe, but the deputy did not need medical attention. He said the deputy was on his way to pick up an inmate from the Lawrence County Jail before the crash.

“It was pretty significant,” he said about the damage.

The e-bike driver ran into the cruiser on the rear driver’s side, damaging the passenger door and breaking the window.

State police are assisting New Castle police in investigating the crash. Its forensic unit and Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit responded.
