North Catholic softball rallies to make state playoffs: Roundup
North Catholic softball rallied with a pair of runs on four hits in the top of the seventh inning, and the No. 7 Trojanettes defeated No. 4 Hampton 4-3 in a WPIAL Class 4A consolation game at North Allegheny High School on Tuesday.
The victory sends North (15-6) to the upcoming PIAA tournament as the third-place team from the WPIAL.
Entering their last chance, the Trojanettes had tallied two runs on just two hits in six innings against Hampton pitcher Marissa Snyder. But they opened the seventh with three straight hits — singles from Mary Kotwica and Kennedy Brown and a two-run double off the bat of Dakota Hicks that gave the Trojanettes the winning margin.
Brown had three hits, including a double. She was also the winning pitcher, allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits in a complete game.
Karns City came up just short of making the PIAA tournament, falling Monday 2-1 to Bedford in a District 9/5 Class 3A subregional title game.
Tyson Frazer hit a two-out, one-run double in the top of the sixth inning to draw the Gremlins (13-9) within a run, but they could not complete the comeback.
Frazer finished 1-for-3, and Camden Slater went 1-for-3, accounting for the only two hits they got against Bedford pitchers Zach Eichleberger and Aspen Anderson. Those two struck out 10 Gremlins.
Joey O’Donnell threw four innings for KC, striking out five while allowing two earned on six hits.
