How Evans City students raised thousands for cancer research in May 2011
More than 1,000 students from Evans City elementary and middle schools on Friday, May 13, 2011, raised more than $10,000 for cancer research in memory of a former beloved teacher.
Lorraine Scarpino, a first-grade teacher at Evans City Elementary School, coordinated the S.T.O.M.P. Out Cancer Walk, which the school has participated in for four years to raise money for the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.
Scarpino said it is in memory of longtime Evans City Elementary kindergarten teacher Linda Saulle, who died of colon cancer in November 2008.
“This means so much to me because it’s a way for us to not only remember Linda, but to help every family that is stricken with this horrible disease,” Scarpino said.
