Butler track’s 4x800 team breaks record; Slippery Rock baseball knocks off Grove City: Roundup

A quartet of Butler boys made history Friday at the Pine-Richland Track and Field Invitational.

In the 4x800-meter relay, Alex Motonis, Logan Rogers, Mateo Saspe and Landon Slear teamed up to win the event in an invitational-record and track-record time of 7:58.77, despite inclement weather.

The previous invite standard was 8:07.33, set by Hampton in 2008.

Butler’s Jason Wick captured the pole vault at a height of 14 feet, 7 inches.

Carter Ekas placed second in the 400 (49.47), while Brendan Eicher was runner-up in the 1,600 at 4:17.44.

Baseball

Slippery Rock built a big lead Friday before hanging on to defeat rival Grove City 10-7 at Critchfield Park.

Connor Zorn had a three-RBI double for the Rockets (8-3) while teammates Parker Dalcamo, Casey Darr and Doug Popovec each had two hits as Slippery Rock led 10-4 after six innings.

Ben Fischer, Gavin Gilmore and Gavin Purdy each doubled for the Eagles (10-5).

Central Catholic 9, North Catholic 5 — Landon Eifler and Luca Guzowski both hit a home run in defeat for the Trojans (4-11).

Punxsutawney 13, Moniteau 0 — The Chucks’ nine-run third inning did in the Warriors.

Punxsy pitcher Nevin Day allowed two hits in the five-inning affair, singles from Carson Minnear and Ian Ross.

Boys lacrosse

Grant Weaver scored five goals and added two assists in Mars’ 13-9 victory against Sewickley Academy.

Jack Tirch added four goals and three assists, Conner Long three goals for the Planets.

Softball

Redbank Valley pitcher Abbey Altobelli squeezed out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh inning to hand Moniteau an 11-10 defeat.

The Warriors led 6-0 after two innings. They tallied just five hits in the game, but took advantage of 15 walks from Altobelli and three Redbank errors.

Alyssa Thompson doubled, scored a run and drove in one for Moniteau.

Boys tennis

Justin Garvey, Alex Weber and Jake Sinclair each won their singles matches as North Catholic dispatched Hampton 4-1 in the WPIAL Class 2A team quarterfinals.

The second-seeded Trojans will face No. 6 Indiana in the semifinals Monday at Kiski Area.

Boys volleyball

North Catholic defeated Mars by scores of 25-20, 23-25, 25-16 and 25-18. No other details were available.
