BASD board considers $12.16 million for projects
BUTLER TWP — Following a bond swap that provides some new cash, Butler Area School District’s board is considering just over $12 million in capital projects that would make fixes on buildings across the district.
At the board’s Monday, April 20, meeting, it approved a resolution to issue a general obligation note of $45.47 million — which amounts to existing debt combined with $12.17 million in new money.
Previously, the board approved the termination of Series 2007 bonds in an April 6 special meeting, followed by a vote to swap it for another bond Monday night.
Superintendent Brian White previously said Series 2007 bonds are variable rate bonds that usually have a high termination fee of $50,000 to $70,000, but current interest rates would neutralize the breakage fee. He said with uncertainty over whether the district could land enough grants to fund some projects, the district decided to take advantage of an opportunity to find additional funds.
Of the project proposals:
• The most expensive is $2.72 million going toward the stadium annex building next to Art Bernardi Stadium.
• At Connoquenessing Elementary School, a roof replacement project is projected to cost $1.65 million.
• The intermediate high school would see exterior cement asbestos panels put in for $1.75 million.
• A Northwest Elementary roof project would cost $1.355 million.
• Another $1.267 million would be spent on projects at Center Avenue Community School.
• The senior high school would see some roof replacement work, gym bleachers replaced, restroom plumbing replacement and new auditorium lighting.
