Harrisville skate park closed until further notice

The Harrisville Borough Police Department has closed its skate park off of Wick Avenue due to safety concerns, according to a Friday, March 13, Facebook post.

A recent inspection stemming from “several” complaints discovered multiple safety hazards that pose a significant risk, according to the post. The park will be closed effective immediately until further notice.

“The well-being of our community — especially our youth — is our top priority, and we cannot allow the park to remain open while these conditions exist,” police said.

“Over time, portions of the equipment and structures have deteriorated to a point where they present potential safety hazards,” said borough council President April Anschutz.

She said the borough has attempted to secure grant funding for repairs and improvements, but they haven’t been successful. The borough is working on getting estimates for repairs, but there is no timeline for when the park may reopen.

Mayor Daniel Anschutz said Harrisville officials contacted the borough’s insurance company and solicitor for guidance. He said solicitor Sean Gallagher recommended the park be closed to avoid injury and liability.

“This was not an easy decision to make, as we know the skate park is a place for our youth and their families to enjoy,” Anschutz said. “However, the safety of our residents and visitors must always come first.”

Police reminded residents trespassing during the closure or after hours may result in a citation.
