Butler man accused of stealing from Fairground Market, Salvation Army

A Butler man is accused of stealing several thousands of dollars from multiple locations, including the Salvation Army, his former place of employment.

Erik Stephen Cupps, 37, was arrested Friday, Jan. 9 after he stole from a Prospect store and the Butler-based Salvation Army, according to charges filed Friday by state police.

Cupps is accused of stealing twice from the Fairground Market in Prospect and once from the Salvation Army in Butler since May.

He was charged with felony burglary and misdemeanor theft in relation to the incidents. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 21 in front of District Judge Joseph Nash.

According to an affidavit, Cupps broke into and stole two cash registers containing around $1,000 on May 13 from the Fairground Market at 1138 New Castle Road.

Surveillance cameras showed Cupps walk into the market and steal the registers before he drove off in his red Ford Explorer, police said. He was previously fired from the business for stealing, according to the affidavit.

The next theft occurred around 2:40 a.m. Dec. 14 at the Salvation Army, police said. Video surveillance from the neighboring business showed the red Ford Explorer traveling behind the building, when Cupps got out and walked into the building, according to the affidavit. He left with approximately $1,148 and two set of keys from the safe, which was forcibly opened, police continued.

On Jan. 1, police said Cupps stole 20 lottery tickets from the Fairground Market. State police determined through camera footage that Cupps arrived in his vehicle, broke in and attempted to break into the safe. He then stole 20 lottery tickets, which he tried to cash later that day, police said.

The car’s license plate was traced back to Cupps, who was also seen on camera attempting to cash the lottery tickets and returning to his car, police said.

He was arrested Friday afternoon at his house and is being held at Butler County Prison on $75,000 bail.

Police said in the affidavit that Cupps has a lengthy criminal history, including numerous retail thefts, receiving stolen property, theft by deception and access device fraud.
