Neubert: Pittsburgh’s Great Race 10K, Applefest 5K among long-running area races coming up to start October

This weekend celebrates the 48th year of one of our region’s largest running events — Pittsburgh’s Great Race 10K.

The event, founded in 1977 by then mayor Richard Caliguiri, started as a community fun run. It has since evolved into a weekend of fun and fitness for all ages and a benefit for the Richard S. Caliguiri Amyloidosis Fund.

The fun begins with Dollar Bank’s Junior Great Race at 9:30 a.m. Saturday and the 1-mile Family Fun Run. A 50-yard Tot Trot and short Diaper Dash across a protective mat follow.

On Sunday, the Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race 5K begins at 8 a.m. in Oakland. The 48th Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race 10K starts at 9:30 a.m. in Frick Park. Both events finish downtown at Point State Park. For more information, visit www.rungreatrace.com

On the following weekend, the town of Franklin celebrates its own historic community run with the Applefest 5K YMCA Race for Any Pace. The town’s connection to apples runs deep, as John “Johnny Appleseed” Chapman made his home in the area from 1797-1804 before embarking on his mission of planting orchards throughout the Midwest. The town’s three-day Applefest beginning Oct. 3 celebrates its 42nd year while the race is nearly that old.

Applefest YMCA Race for Any Pace starts at 9:15 a.m. Oct. 4 with the Tiny Trotter, a 50-yard dash (ages 3-7), followed by Junior Jog, a 1-mile run/walk (ages 8-12) at 9:30. The 5K run starts at 10 a.m. with a 5K walk at 10:05. Dogs and strollers are welcome in the 5K run or walk with strollers requested to line up toward the rear of the crowd for safety.

The awards ceremony for Applefest Race for Any Pace takes place soon after the 5K finish, allowing participants more time to attend Applefest’s other activities. Competitive awards include medals and a surprise gift for top three overall male and female finishers and top masters in both the run and the walk. Top three runners and first walker in age categories 13-and-under through 70-plus also earn medals. All finishers in Junior Jog and Tiny Trotter also receive medals.

Marcy Shoenfelt, co-race director and membership director for Franklin/Grove City YMCA, describes the out-and-back course as almost flat. Although it can produce fast times, it’s also scenic, passing through the spectator-lined downtown. Shoenfelt says that’s why so many run or walk not for records, but for the fun and community of Applefest.

“Applefest brings people together,” she said. “Walking or running together is part of a long tradition and the feeling of belonging to a community.”

Last year, nearly 600 people of all ages participated in the Applefest run/walk events. Rachel Bish, YMCA health and wellness director and co-race director, hopes to top that number this year. She said having several years of sunny, cool fall weather has helped to bring people out and hopes for more of the same Saturday.

Applefest Race for Any Pace is one of many “mission-based” events directed by Franklin/Grove City YMCA. Proceeds from the event help fund the Y’s Health and Wellness Department’s mission to help youth, seniors with everyday functions and YMCA scholarships to the 35% of members who need them.

It’s not too late to register for Applefest YMCA 5K Race for Any Pace. Online registration is open until Oct. 3 at www.franklinapplefest.com, by phone at 814-432-2138 or in person at Franklin or Grove City YMCA. Day of event registration opens at 8 a.m. at Franklin YMCA near the race start.

Organizers advise arriving early on race day as parking is available on the street and in several lots but in no designated location. And prepare to stay after the race for the Applefest celebration, which includes activities, arts and crafts, plenty of food vendors and, most importantly, a community of friends.
