High school roundup: Freeport baseball’s Dustin Kohan tosses no-hitter vs Highlands
Freeport senior pitcher Dustin Kohan hurled a no-hitter against Highlands on Thursday, striking out 13 and walking just one in an 8-1 baseball victory for the host Yellowjackets.
Kohan threw 94 pitches, 67 for strikes. He added a base hit and two RBIs at the plate.
Chase Walker paced Freeport on offense with a single, double, run scored and one driven in. The team pulled away by scoring six runs in the fifth inning.
The Yellowjackets (13-6, 8-4) will enter the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs riding a six-game winning streak. Brackets will be released Friday.
Oil City 9, Slippery Rock 7 — The Oilers scored six runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pull away from the Rockets (10-3) in this night game.
The Rockets’ Parker Dalcamo (2-for-4) tripled, doubled, scored a run and drove in another; and Casey Darr (1-for-3) also tripled and recorded two RBIs. Isaac McCandless went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Two fourth-inning Grove City home runs helped doom Slippery Rock in an 8-3 loss Thursday against its rival.
Joslyn Korcok went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Emma Ritz went 1-for-2 with an RBI for the Rockets.
Dustin Joyce won the long jump and finished second in the triple jump to headline Slippery Rock’s performance in the Mercer County invitational at Grove City High School on Thursday.
Johnson jumped 21 feet, 9 inches in the long jump, and 42-7.25 in the triple. He also ran on the fourth-place 4x400 relay team.
Tessa Szymanski also came away with a win in the girls 3200-meter run in 12:35.31. Samantha Montgomery brought home a long jump silver (16-1) and triple jump bronze (33-2.5), and finished eighth with the 4x100 relay team. Aiva Reich added a bronze in the 100 hurdles (16.60) to go along with fourth in the 300 hurdles (49.17) and two relay eighths.
Josh Tustin took home two bronzes in the boys 110 hurdles (15.87) and 300 hurdles (41.38). Hunter Doerflinger also earned third in the 800 (2:01.64) and was part of the 4x400 relay and 4x800 relay that took sixth.
