College sports roundup: Butler grad Tori Stevenson leads Grove City soccer to conference title

Grove City women’s soccer won the Presidents’ Athletic Conference championship for the second straight year Saturday, beating Westminster 4-3.

Butler grad and sophomore forward Tori Stevenson scored the go-ahead goal to make it 3-2 GC in the second half, and Erin Venus made it 4-2 10 minutes later.

The Wolverines (13-3-3) qualified for the NCAA Division III championship tournament for the second straight year and will visit Misericordia (17-1-2) in Saturday’s first round.

Men’s soccer

Slippery Rock beat Seton Hill 1-0 in the PSAC Tournament quarterfinals on Monday. It’s the first tournament win for The Rock in nine years.

Aashi Pander scored the lone goal. SRU will face top-seed Bloomsburg in Friday’s semifinals at noon.

Men’s basketball

Slippery Rock lost to Virginia Union 73-70 in overtime Saturday to fall to 1-1 to start the season.

Jomo Goings, a redshirt junior guard, scored 26 points and had six rebounds, six assists and three steals for The Rock.

Women’s basketball

Slippery Rock started the season 1-1, blowing out Davis & Elkins 79-42 in the season opener Saturday before losing 89-75 to Glenville State on Sunday.

Grad transfer Tahmala Thorpe led SRU with 13 points, making all three 3-point attempts, in the opener. Regan Atkins recorded her fourth career double-double with 21 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists in Sunday’s loss.
