Connoquenessing Township seeks funding for new municipal building

CONNOQUENESSING TWP — Township officials are working through the beginning stages of securing funding for a new municipal building at 102 Township Drive.

In order to try to achieve that long-term goal, council unanimously approved the submission of a Local Share Account Grant application for $1 million at a meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

The current municipal building has significant internal and external issues, according to township Supervisor Angela Fleeger, who addressed more than a dozen residents about the future plans.

“Just to elaborate on the need for a new building, yes, we are still using this building right now, but it has a lot of long-term problems,” she said. “It’s got a leaking roof, and I believe the air conditioning is out and can’t be repaired. There’s issues with the heater and windows as well.”

Municipalities can submit multiple funding proposals for various public interest projects, but solicitor Andrew Menchyk Jr. recommended that the supervisors stick with one project to prevent undermining their credibility when it comes to requesting funds for the municipal building.

“There’s just a lot going on with the building itself, so that is why we’re looking at the LSA grant option to try and get township residents a better building,” Fleeger said.

The state’s Department of Community and Economic Development annually distributes LSA funding based on project requirements. The funding is not guaranteed; township officials could receive a portion of what they ask for, depending on what the department deems appropriate.
