Zelie Borough Council authorizes $279K for police vehicles

ZELIENOPLE — Borough council will move forward with the purchase of three police interceptor SUVs and one police responder pickup at a cost of $279,346.95.

The purchase was approved unanimously during a council workshop meeting Monday, Sept. 30.

The council president and borough manager/secretary will enter into a loan with WesBanco on behalf of the borough to finance the vehicles.

The purchase is part of the department’s regular police vehicle replacement cycle, Zelienople Police Chief James A. Miller said.

“The borough has always been supportive, making sure the police department has all the equipment we need,” Miller said.

A police interceptor is a specialized Ford Explorer SUV that includes enhanced performance features.

A police responder is a Ford F-150, America’s only “pursuit-rated” pickup truck, according to the company website.

Once the vehicles are delivered, they will be outfitted with radios, computers, lights, interior cages, and front and rear cameras, Miller said. The timeline for these installations is not known, he said.

Other actions

Council approved a new roof for the Zelienople Municipal Building at 111 W. New Castle St.

The $104,890 project was awarded to BurMac Commercial Roofing, of Freeport, according to Tom Thompson of engineering firm Gannett Fleming.

Mayor Thomas M. Oliverio said he will host a luncheon for Butler County elected officials at the Slippery Rock Golf Club and Events Center to discuss countywide issues. Oliverio serves as the president of the Butler County Boroughs Association.

Borough council endorsed the request of Elliott J. Hilton, governor for Lions Club District 14-N and former president of the Zelienople Lions Club, for support of the Lions Club Annual Halloween Parade, scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 29. The club is in need of volunteers and seeks new members to support its charitable programs in the region, Hilton said.
