Sing Hosanna! put on a production of “Newsies” a few years ago, and the children involved in that musical had such a good time, the group is bringing the show back next week in junior form.

“Newsies” tells the story of a group of newspaper carriers who go on strike after a publisher raises the price per paper. According to Ralph Christy, the show’s producer and director, “Newsies Jr.” is the same show but a little shorter than the full production and meant for children between the ages of 7 and 18.

Christy said it was the children’s experience from the last production that led him to produce the show again.

“Everyone had such a great time with it, and the kids just loved the music,” he said. “It's a lot of athletic dancing. They're just never sitting still.”

The production features Jacob Scanlon as Jack, Mia McGrady as Katherine, Isaac Hixon as Davey and Quintin Hixon as Crutchie.

Christy said there are about 35 children involved in the production, many of whom are part of the dancing scenes. He said the cast is excited to debut the production next week.

“It has been going quite well. Most of the kids knew the music before we even started,” Christy said. “There's some challenging dancing and just having a great time.”

“Newsies Jr.” starts at 7:30 p.m. June 19 and June 20 at the Succop Theater at Butler County Community College’s main campus in Butler Township. Tickets are $18 and all seats have to be reserved. For tickets or more information, visit singhosanna.ticketleap.com, or call 724-290-8900.
