Jennings plans full schedule of activities this summer
Jennings Environmental Education Center in Slippery Rock, one of three state parks in the Butler County area, has a full schedule of activities for people of all ages this summer.
June 14 and July 19 — Jennings is hosting two casual bird walks, both starting at 9 a.m. Participants will meet in the prairie-side parking lot. The park has a limited number of binoculars to hand out.
June 15 through 30 — A “Storybook Trail,” featuring the children’s story Squirmin Worman’s Amazing Adventure, will be featured. The trail takes place along the relatively easy Blazing Star Trail at the entrance to the prairie.
July 5 — Jennings is celebrating fireflies with a 45-minute indoor presentation called “Fireflies: Nature’s Fireworks,” followed by a stroll through the park prairie to hopefully seek some out. Registration is required for this event, which starts at 8:30 p.m.
July 10 — The firefly celebration continues with “The Magic of Fireflies: An Evening Adventure for Families,” an educational program starting at 7:30 p.m. on fireflies designed for children and families. Registration is required and space is limited.
July 20 through Aug. 4 — Jennings will hold self-guided walkabouts through the prairie. This period is peak bloom season for the prairie, and visitors can pick up a free guide and follow the route to discover more about the flowers on display.
July 23, Aug. 14 and Sept. 12 — Jennings is also holding evening prairie bloom walks on three nights throughout the summer from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The park has a limited number of binoculars to hand out. Visitors are encouraged to attend all three walks to see how the prairie changes throughout the season.
