Eyes on the Prize

North girls claim WPIAL 4X100 relay crown

SLIPPERY ROCK — North Catholic's girls 4x100 relay team could have qualified for states by placing in the top four at Wednesday's WPIAL Track and Field Championships, but the Trojanettes were motivated to achieve more.

The quartet of Sunni Love, Daphne Flerl, Anna Lazzara and Seava Cresta earned district bragging rights by winning the event with a time of 48.09 seconds. They will travel to the state championship meet, scheduled Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg University, with a full head of steam.

"It's the third time this season that we broke the school record," said Flerl, who ran the second leg and was part of the previous standard of 48.98. "We were tied with Mt. Lebanon for the best time in the WPIAL coming in, so we wanted to beat them and we did."

Upper St. Clair was runner-up at 48.64 and Mt. Lebanon third at 48.80.

"We won by a lot, so we were happy with it," Flerl said. "Last year, we missed out on states by one spot by placing fifth. We're excited about making it as district champion. It feels good to make the climb."

Also making the state meet by their place were Seneca Valley's Kathryn Morrison in the 100 hurdles ( 3rd) and Jordan Monteleone in the high jump (4th) as well as North Catholic's Gracie Plastino in the 3,200 run.

A number of SV and North Catholic athletes extended their season to states due to meeting the qualifying standard. They include the Raiders' Kyler Matson (300 hurdles) and the 4x800 relay team of Sydney Heltzell, Paige Damico, Claire Riehl and Delaney Mansfield. For North, Cresta (100 and 200 dash) and the 4x800 relay quartet of Plastino, Sydney Dunn, Grace Lazzara and Madeline Meeuf will be competing in Shippensburg.
