Harmony’s new fire station taking shape for August move-in

On time and on budget

Construction of Harmony’s new fire station is in a “good spot,” according to Kevin Behun, Harmony Fire District president.

“According to our schedule, we are projected to be completed on time, and the budget is holding with the contingents that have been planned,” Behun said. “We are shooting for an August move-in date at this point, which would be on schedule.”

All the interior concrete for the new $7.8 million firehouse was laid this week, and an air handler was placed on the roof of the new building, thereby allowing a masonry team to begin laying brick for the site. Construction began in August of last year and hasn’t had any significant setbacks, according to Behun.

“The major items that could have delayed us significantly are mostly behind us,” he said. “We’re pretty confident we’ll be able to continue on time.”

On Thursday contractors poured nearly 120 yards of concrete for the apparatus bay floor, which Behun said has allowed the building to start taking shape.

“It’s nice to be able to walk through the bay now and see where we’ll be able to park the trucks and start to visualize where things are going to come together,” he said.

The new bay will have enough space for four large fire-vehicle apparatuses and two command size vehicles.

Behun said the fire house plans to have an open house for the public to tour the new facility around the time of Zelienople’s fall festival.
