Moraine, McConnells Mill have full lineup of programs in May
The end of the school year is right around the corner, and both Moraine and McConnells Mill state parks are ready to welcome visitors of all ages with a full lineup of events in May.
■ On Saturday, May 4, Moraine is hosting a shiitake mushroom workshop, which will instruct visitors on how to identify shiitake mushrooms and grow their own in their backyard. This event takes place from 9 a.m. to noon at the South Shore park office.
■ McConnells Mill will host a wildflower walk on Sunday, May 5 in its Hell’s Hollow area, where hikers can point out and identify the park’s many wildflowers. This walk lasts from 1 to 3 p.m. and starts from the Hell’s Hollow parking lot.
■ McConnells Mill will open its historic 19th century grist mill on Thursday, May 16. This event lasts from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and admission is free. The mill will be open to the public through Labor Day, every Wednesday through Sunday, as well as summer holidays and Memorial Day.
■ Sunday, May 26 is Fish for Free Day in Pennsylvania, which means anyone in Pennsylvania is allowed to go fishing on that day without a fishing license. Moraine State Park is offering fishing equipment for this day which can be picked up at the South Shore park office. The equipment must be returned by 4 p.m.
