SRU softball scores narrow sweep of IUP

SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University softball team rallied from nine runs down in the second game against Indiana (Pa.) on Sunday, scoring a 12-11 victory in eight innings and a sweep of their doubleheader.

SRU (15-20, 8-8) won the first game, 3-2, in eight innings. IUP slipped to 22-15 overall, 8-9 in the PSAC West.

The Rock trailed 11-2 in the fifth inning of Game 2 , but scored eight runs in that frame. After tying the game in the seventh, SRU got the win in the eighth on a Julia Montie home run. Alyssa Sheely and Aubrey Mansfield had three hits each for SRU, Mansfield connecting for three doubles and three RBI.

SRU returns to action Tuesday, hosting Mercyhurst for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.

Baseball

SRU split a twinbill with California (Pa.) on Sunday at Critchfield Park, losing the opener, 9-7, and winning the nightcap, 15-9.

The Rock is 19-11 overall, 10-6 in the PSAC West. The Vulcans are 23-10, 10-6.

Cam Panyko Morris had five hits in the twinbill, including a home run, five RBI and three runs scored. Brandon Butler, a freshman, had four hits, including a home run, and scored three runs. Gage Gillott drove in three runs.

Koby Bubash ended the weekend on an 11-game hitting streak. Michael Kitko has reached base in 11 straight games.

The Rock hosts Tiffin for a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
