Ryan Gloyer Middle School students raise funds for Josh Gibson Foundation
Ryan Gloyer Middle School Bobcat Team members raised more than $300 for the Josh Gibson Foundation to honor Charlie Hughes, the Pittsburgh-born African American professional baseball player who was buried without a headstone.
Sean Gibson, executive director of the Josh Gibson Foundation and great-grandson of home-run hitter Josh Gibson, will meet with students on Tuesday, March 26 to accept the donation.
Students wrote essays, recorded speeches, designed flyers and asked for donations to help raise money for the initiative.
The Josh Gibson Foundation honors late players in the Negro Baseball Leagues who were buried in unmarked graves and raises money to place gravestones at their burial plots. Unmarked graves span 13 cemeteries throughout Allegheny County.
