A birthday present for Marc Fogel’s mother: Say his name

During last week’s State of the Union address Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Green, R-Ga., shouted “Say her name!” at President Joe Biden.

The name was Lakin Riley, the nursing student killed near the University of Georgia in February. The man accused of killing her was in the U.S. illegally.

There is another name we — and many others — also want to hear Biden say: Marc Fogel.

Fogel, a Butler native, was arrested in August 2021 when returning to Russia, where he was a teacher, and accused of drug smuggling for having about half an ounce of medical marijuana, which had been prescribed for chronic back pain. Fogel was sentenced to 14 years in prison and is being held in a penal colony about six hours outside of Moscow.

His mother, Malphine Fogel, turned 95 on Monday, March 11. She has only one wish: To see her son again.

Marc Fogel isn’t prominent. He isn’t a basketball star like Brittany Griner. He isn’t a journalist for the Wall Street Journal like Evan Gershkovich. He isn’t employed by an international corporation like Paul Whelan.

Griner was arrested in February 2022 and accused of having marijuana. She was released in December 2022 in exchange for arms dealer Viktor Bout.

Gershkovich was arrested in March 2023 and accused of espionage. His case has drawn nationwide attention.

Paul Whelan is a former U.S. Marine who was arrested in Russia in 2018 while working as director of global security and investigations for auto parts maker BorgWarner. In 2020 he was sentenced to 16 years in prison for espionage, a charge he denies.

Marc Fogel isn’t nearly as well known as Griner, Gershkovich or Whelan, but his case is no less heartbreaking. Fogel has been detained for nearly three years.

But unlike the others, the U.S. State Department hasn’t declared Marc Fogel wrongfully detained.

And while Biden mentioned both Gershkovich and Whelan in his State of the Union speech, Marc Fogel’s name was absent.

March Fogel has now spent years in a Russia prison. He’s missed the college graduations of his two sons, 23-year-old Sam and 25-year-old Ethan. And on Monday, he missed his mother’s 95th birthday.

It’s long past time, Mr. President. Say his name.
