North girls move on

CRANBERRY TWP — The standard is the standard for North Catholic girls basketball.

The program is seeking its eighth straight WPIAL championship appearance and seventh title during that span.

After a dominating 65-32 victory over Central Valley on Friday, the Trojanettes are one step closer to a three-peat and a league-record 23 titles. North Catholic’s star duo of Harvard recruit Alayna Rocco and Brady Wehner combined for 36 points and 11 treys.

But North Catholic’s depth also shined against the Warriors.

Anna Lazzarra provided a spark off the bench with her shot-making, play-making and defense. Lazzarra scored seven points in the first half and played with infectious energy. Lauren Reitz scored 14 points by drawing fouls and converting at the free throw line. Reitz led the Trojanettes in rebounds on the evening.

“Anna was a great spark tonight, she hit a three, got a steal,” North Catholic coach Molly Rottmann said. “I thought they did a great job.”

North Catholic’s defense was stifling – holding Central Valley to just nine points in the first half and one point in the second quarter.

Rottmann believes there’s still room to improve despite a good performance on the defensive side of the ball.

“I was happy with three of the four quarters,” Rottmann said. “That third quarter, I thought that we lost a little bit of focus, but overall I thought it was a really solid effort tonight.”

North Catholic will play No. 3 seed Elizabeth Forward on Tuesday night with a trip to the WPIAL championship game on the line.
