Rock drops pair at California

CALIFORNIA, Pa. — The Slippery Rock University men’s basketball team had its three-game winning streak snapped Saturday with an 80-69 loss at California (Pa.).

SRU (11-11, 9-7) holds the fourth-place spot in the PSAC West standings with six games to play. The Rock leads Mercyhurst (8-8) and Seton HIll (8-9) in that battle for fourth. The fourth-place team hosts an opening-round tournament game.

Maceo Austin paced The Rock on Saturday with 25 points and eight rebounds. Ike Herster scored 12 points before fouling out. Jomo Goings chipped in nine points, seven rebounds and three assists. KJ McClurg, the PSAC’s leading scorer, led No. 16 California (20-3, 14-4) with 36 points.

California 72, SRU (women) 53 — Kristina Donza paced The Rock (2-17, 2-14) with 15 points, three rebounds and two steals. Regan Atkins had 11 points and four rebounds.

SRU trailed only 35-31 at halftime before the Vulcans (16-7, 11-6) pulled away. Dejah Terrell scored 20 points and snared nine rebounds to lead California.

Both Rock teams return to action Wednesday at Gannon, the women’s game at 5:30 p.m., the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.
