‘A faculty that cares’ makes a difference

In Tuesday’s Eagle, staff writer Eddie Trizzino told us about the Butler Area School District's board of directors and their regular community engagement sessions.

News items about education usually cover curriculum changes, construction projects, new hires, student discipline and the like.

But this story was different. This story was like a warm blanket.

Dave Patton, of Butler, attended the meeting at Broad Street Elementary School to see his 11-year-old daughter, Selah Patton, speak at the meeting. He also told the attending directors the school's staff is a passionate group who go the extra mile to care for the students.

“Never ever, ever have I ever had a faculty who cares more than at this school,” Patton said.

Staff at the school explained their areas of focus and educating children, which included initiatives that cater to the needs of individual children at the school.

“Personalized learning is what we do,” said Meghan Lucas, a teacher at Broad Street Elementary. “Every kid gets that here.”

These are refreshing words to hear from parents and teachers.

The folks in attendance took a tour of the school, guided by students. Before that, several people spoke.

Vanessa Boyd, principal at Broad Street, said the school is focused on community partnerships, which not only provide children with what they need, but help get new groups involved with the school as well.

The staff echoed the importance of making the students feel welcome at the school.

“One of the things we want them to know is that they are loved and cared for here,” said Amanda Twidwell, third-grade teacher at Broad Street Elementary.

What happens day to day in schools can be a whirlwind of chaos and high emotions. It’s nice to see this snapshot, reminding us of the good work going on in the crazy buzz of education. The heart and soul of our children’s education.
