Planets win in Florida

Mars exploded for 26 points in the second quarter and held off a late rally to defeat McNicholas (OH) by a score of 75-70 at a boys basketball tournament in Florida on Wednesday.

Senior Ryan Ceh scored 30 points to spark the victory and Drew Navetta added 12 points for the Planets (3-4), who snapped a 3-game losing skid.

Yorba Linda (CA) 36, Seneca Valley 33 — Tyler Pepin’s 10 points paced the Raiders in this low-scoring affair at a tournament in Florida.

Yorba Linda scored 18 points in the first quarter before being held by the Raiders to a combined 18 points over the final three periods.

Lincoln Park 72, North Catholic 58 — At PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Max Hurray tallied 17 points for the Trojans (4-3) and Jude Rottmann 15, all on treys.

Brandon Cummings netted 25 points for Lincoln Park.

Girls Basketball

Karns City outscored Saegertown 29-8 in the second half in earning a 44-25 victory in the first day of the Lakeview Holiday Tournament.

Chloe Fritch paced the Gremlins (5-3) with 12 points while teammate Hanna Dailey had a dozen steals.

KARNS CITY 44

Naomi Venesky 8, Chloe Fritch 12, Hanna Dailey 4, Savanna Prescott 9, Hannah Buchanon 2, Brooklynn Taylor 9. Totals: 18 5-7 44.

Baldwin 62, Mars 48 — The Planets trailed by four points at halftime, but managed only five points in the fourth quarter of this game at the Highlands Tournament. Vita Vargo scored 17 points for Mars with Cecilia Christy adding 13.

Kathleen Lucarelli led Baldwin with 23 points. Lynsey Bernotas added 15 and Laci Bernotas 13.

Wrestling

Anastasia Manchester went 5-1, with all five wins coming by fall, to place third at 142 pounds to lead Butler’s girls at the Powerade Tournament at Canon-McMillan High School.

Her pins came against Pine-Richland’s Jarah Casciani, Parkersburg South’s Brenna Riggs, Canon-McMillan’s Kadence Merigo, Kiski Area’s Alyssa Tresco and Trinity’s Elaina Ashby.

The Golden Tornado’s Brin Zehmisch earned fourth place at 106 pounds, going 3-2 with a pin of Redbank Valley’s Emma Taladay.

Also competing for Butler were Lilliana Burgardt (112 pounds), Haylee Gruseck (118), Kaylee Christie (124), Melissa Arcuri (130) and Kaitlynn Plopi (136).

Butler placed 15th out of 41 teams at the event.
