State Farm Bill grants $15,000 to Butler Area School District

Butler Area School District is getting $15,000 from the Pennsylvania Farm Bill, which will be used to further support agricultural education in the district.

District superintendent Brian White said Tuesday, Nov. 14 about $5,400 will be used for fisheries science program materials, including hydroponic grow stations and consumable materials in fish tanks at several schools in the district. About $5,100 will be used to buy additional raised bed gardens and garden supplies at various schools and about $4,500 will be spent on soil enhancements and greenhouse supplies at Summit Township Elementary School.

Pennsylvania agriculture secretary Russell Redding announced Tuesday the PA Farm Bill Farm-to-School Grants, totaling of $605,398, will be awarded to 56 education centers in 28 counties. Grants of up to $15,000 will support projects aimed at improving access to healthy, local food and increasing hands-on learning for children in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, according to a news release from the department of agriculture.

Butler Area School District has used grants from the department of agriculture and other government entities to install gardening materials at Summit Township Elementary, which is a community agricultural partnership school.
