Jets release RB Michael Carter after hints that offensive changes were coming
NEW YORK — On Tuesday, the Jets announced a surprising move with changes expected offensively.
Gang Green released running back Michael Carter a day after coach Robert Saleh said the team is considering making personnel changes.
“We’re looking at everything, guys,” Saleh said. “As far as personnel changes, we’re looking at some things, some different personnel changes, which I’m going to keep here with me, but we’re looking across the board to see if we can find a way to generate some offense.”
The release of Carter is a mild surprise. The Jets selected Carter in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL draft. During his rookie season in 2021, Carter started in 11 games and rushed for 639 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 4.3 yards per carry.
However, Carter struggled during his sophomore campaign and had his role diminished with the selection of Breece Hall in the second round of the 2022 draft. Carter finished last season with 402 yards and three touchdowns.
The Jets complimented Carter’s professionalism in training camp last summer after a down 2022 season.
“He comes out, he does his job,” Saleh said in July. “He’s not the first or the last player to not have the second year that they want. It just seems to be like a little plague that goes around in the NFL with second-year players, but he’s been great this entire offseason.
“He’s very deliberate in the way he works through and I’m excited about him. His mental makeup and all that, I think he’s going to bounce back really well.”
Carter continued to slide down the Jets depth chart after the team signed veteran Dalvin Cook in mid-August. This year, Carter was mainly used as the Jets third down running back.
He registered 38 yards rushing and 15 catches for 68 yards. With Carter’s release, the Jets will likely expand rookie Israel Abanikanda’s role. Abanikanda has yet to play in a game this season after the Jets chose him in the fifth round of last April’s draft.
The Jets' offense has struggled this season. Gang Green ranks 29th in yards (283.1) and 30th in points per game (16.0).
It has been 11 quarters since the Jets scored a touchdown. The team has lost two consecutive games, including a 16-12 loss to the Raiders on Sunday Night Football.
