Freeport girls, SR boys clinch soccer titles
A second-half goal from Camryn Woods stood up as Freeport’s girls soccer team clinched the Section 2-2A championship with a 1-0 victory at Knoch on Wednesday.
Alyssa Alcorn earned the shutout in net for the Yellowjackets (11-1-1, 8-1-1).
Knoch (8-5-2, 5-3-1) closes the regular season Monday at Deer Lakes.
Butler 1, Fox Chapel 1 — Madison Rose scored for Butler as the Golden Tornado battled the Foxes to a stalemate.
Butler (9-6-1, 7-5-1) closes the regular season at home Monday against North Hills.
Girls Volleyball
Davina Pry tallied nine kills while Lily Staab, Marissa Pry and Sydney Bayless each had seven kills, but Moniteau fell to Punxsutawney in five sets.
Bayless added eight blocks in defeat.
Knoch 3, Ambridge 0 — Sabrina Schlott had seven kills and Brynne Smith 22 service points for the Knights (12-4, 8-2).
Knoch won the match by scores of 25-19, 25-18 and 26-24.
Cross Country
Numerous athletes placed at the Red, White and Blue Classic at White Oak Park recently.
Michael Braun of Freeport placed third in the boys Class 2A race with a time of 15 minutes, 40 seconds. Giacomo Lepore of North Catholic was fifth in 16:16, Carter French of Knoch eighth in 16:33, Tyler Carroll of North Catholic 10th in 16:36.
Gracie Plastino of North Catholic was fourth in girls 2A in 19:25. The Trojanettes’ Madeline Meeuf eighth in 19:48, Knoch’s Ava Santora 12th in 20:11. Max Smith of Seneca Valley was 12th in the boys 3A race in 16:32.
Boys Soccer
Mars closed the regular season on a five-game winning streak, defeating Kiski Area 6-0 on Tuesday and Highlands 1-0 on Wednesday.
The Planets (11-3-1, 9-2-1) has outscored the opposition 20-1 during its current run.
Slippery Rock 4, Hickory 0 — Trent Davey, Max Kovacik, Zach Lasko and Dylan Freehling each scored and the Rockets clinched the Region 2 title with this victory at Troy-Alan Stadium.
Travis Ray and Collin Wimer both contributed an assist and Josh Book made two saves for the Rockets (14-2, 9-0).
