Diocese of Pittsburgh issues statement on fatal van crash

A 15-year-old student at Serra Catholic High School in McKeesport died as a result of a collision between a school van and another vehicle in Dravosburg on Wednesday morning, Sept. 20.

The student was identified by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office as Samantha Kalkbrenner.

Three other Serra Catholic students were taken to a nearby hospital, along with the drivers of each vehicle. The three students were reported in stable condition, while according to multiple reports, the two drivers were in critical condition.

The Diocese of Pittsburgh issued a statement on the accident on Wednesday afternoon, confirming that classes and all other activities at Serra Catholic have been canceled for the remainder of the week. Counselors from Serra Catholic and other Catholic schools in the area have been employed to assist those who are grieving.

“At a time like this, we become aware of how precious life is and how important it is to support each other not only during tragedy but always,” said Bishop David Zubik in a news release.
