Yellowjackets cruise to 47-0 win over South Allegheny

BUFFALO TWP — Freeport extended its home winning streak to seven games, blanking South Allegheny 47-0, behind a complete team performance.

The Yellowjackets defense stifled South Allegheny, holding the Gladiators to under 100 yards for the game. South Allegheny freshman quarterback Malakai Myers was picked off by Freeport sophomore linebacker Colton Mellish before completing a pass. South Allegheny failed to record a first down until the second quarter.

Gladiator junior running back Cameron Epps — who rushed for 226 yards and two touchdowns last week — was held to just 18 rushing yards.

“The kids are going to be going nuts when I tell them that,” Freeport coach John Gaillot said.

Senior running back Colton Otterman rushed for 105 yards and two touchdowns and made his impact felt on the defensive side of the ball as well, recording two sacks.

Gaillot was almost left speechless about the way Otterman stepped up in the absence of senior running back Justin Jack, who left the game in the first half with an injury.

“He’s amazing,” Gaillot said.

Freeport sophomore quarterback Drew Ross threw for 60 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore Madden Wisniewski and senior Brady Sullivan both caught touchdown passes to open the scoring. Sullivan also recovered an onside kick on the opening kickoff.

“We were not kicking it to number four [Epps],” Gaillot said. “If it goes out of bounds, it goes out of bounds.”

Freeport’s special team’s unit continued to shine throughout the game as senior Cyprian Selinger returned a punt for a 35-yard touchdown later in the first half. The Yellowjackets followed that up by blocking the next punt and took a 33-0 lead into the locker room.

On the opening play of the third quarter, Wisniewski took a punt 79 yards for a score to put the mercy rule into effect.

The Yellowjackets got contributions from everybody up and down the roster — freshman quarterback Danny King connected with sophomore wide out Anthony O’Donnell on a 30-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead heading into the fourth quarter.

“The kids played extremely well,” Gaillot said. “We didn’t prepare our kids well for Indiana, we let one slip there. The kids came back with a vengeance.”

Freeport will look to continue its momentum next week against Quaker Valley.
