Mars Area students compete at English festival

Several Mars Area Middle School students competed in the 2023 Youngstown State University English Festival on April 21.

In the Trivia event, eighth-grader Alexis Abbey earned first place; eighth-graders Lily Cicconi and Sophia Furman took second place; and seventh-grader Isabelle Tang received an honorable mention.

In the Limericks competition, eighth-graders Amanda Morrison and Alexa Knowlton each earned first place. In the Impromptu Writing contest, eighth-grader Alexis Abbey earned second place, and eighth-grader Mei Lien Mansfield and seventh-grader Reese Polito each received an honorable mention.

Eighth-grader Claire Norris took third place and eighth-grader Grace Nam received an honorable mention in the Writing Games. Seventh-graders Riley Long and Sage Mahan received honorable mentions in the Jeremy Salvner Music Competition.

Other participants included eighth-graders Reagan Dunn, Sophia Gourash, Mackenzie Ivanchan, Adriana Montesano, Ava Moravek, Amanda Morrison and Elaina Riegler.

The annual event, which is meant to promote and cultivate reading and writing, is open to students in grades seven through 12 from schools in Western Pennsylvania and Ohio.
