James Moniot
James “Jim” Louis Moniot, of Chesapeake, Va., passed away peacefully May 10, 2023, at the age of 102. You read that correctly and it bears repeating; this man enjoyed the rare privilege of living to be 102 years old.
Born in Butler, on Feb. 23, 1921, Jim was the oldest of three children and was the son of the late Louis and Hilda Eichenlaub Moniot.
In 1971, James retired as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy after more than 34 years of service, during which he traveled to over 40 different countries and served a three-year duty station in Naples, Italy.
During his lifetime, James was known for his love of golf, traveling, using Lifebuoy soap, and studying genealogy. He was especially dedicated to carefully documenting the Moniot family history with provenance back to the 1600s in Mangiennes, France. He thoroughly enjoyed socializing at family reunions and connecting with extended family throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.
James was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Mary (Paganelli) Moniot; his son-in-law, Jimmy Bell; and grandson, Bradley Bell.
His manifest of surviving family includes his four children, Vincent Moniot (Rebecca), Melanie Bell, Paula Guerrieri (Richard), and David Moniot (Catherine).
Also left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren, Jacqueline Weadon (Jonathan), Megan Kokoska (Brian), Michael Guerrieri, Mark Guerrieri (Jolita), Marguerite Moniot and Matthew Moniot.
Finally, his six great-grandchildren left to carry on his legacy are, Lily Kelly, Alexa Kokoska, Ella Wharam, Benjamin Weadon, Keira Kokoska and Leonardo Guerrieri.
