Margaret Moniot
Margaret (Kavchak) Moniot, 94, formerly of Lyndora, passed away Thursday morning, May 18, 2023.
She was born Jan. 2, 1929, in Butler, and was a daughter of the late Peter Kavchak and Mary (Druga) Kavchak.
Margaret was a graduate of Butler High School.
After graduation, she worked as a secretary at Gravely Tractors in Butler, where she met her late husband, Herb, when he and his brother came in to purchase farm equipment. She also worked at White’s Millinery of Main Street, Butler, where her sister, Mary was the manager.
She grew up in Lyndora and married Herbert E. Moniot on Feb. 12, 1950, at St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church in Lyndora. Keeping up with the fashion trends at the time, her wedding dress was pink. During her courtship, Herb, who had obtained his private pilot’s license, flew over the bus stop where he knew Margaret would be waiting for the bus to go to work.
Margaret and Herb both appeared as extras in several Hollywood movies shot locally, including, “Bob Roberts” (1992), “Lorenzo’s Oil” (1992), “Striking Distance” (1993) and “Cemetery Club” (1993). Margaret was one of the extras featured prominently in a red dress and straw hat in an election night scene in “Bob Roberts.”
She was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church in Lyndora, and for years she supervised the church’s lovely Christmas decorations.
Marge, as she was known by friends, loved wearing hats and dressing up, embraced her cultural background of Czechoslovakian ethnicity and heritage, and was also bilingual. She enjoyed making traditional holiday meals at Christmas and Easter and decorating Eastern European eggs and church baskets.
She was a dedicated, selfless caregiver for family members over the years, and was a supportive mom chauffeuring and chaperoning Drew’s high school rock band, The Sequins. She was honest, straightforward to a fault, a tireless worker, hard working, headstrong, and enjoyed her home and spending time on her patio with family and friends. She loved pets, including her two dogs, a cat and a chipmunk. She enjoyed music. Her interests varied from James Taylor to Frank Sinatra to The Who, all of whom she saw in concert.
Surviving are her son, Drew, and his wife, Carrie; and four nephews, Lance, Larry, Lang and Lane Lipscomb.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herb; her brother, John; and her sisters, Helen, Mary and Sue.
