All-electronic tolling coming to Turnpike

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has begun building the final phase of its all-electronic tolling implementation.

Work is underway to relocate tolling points in eastern Pennsylvania from their current interchange locations. New highway-speed collection points are being built along the road between interchanges using a technique called Open Road Tolling, or ORT — a cashless, free-flowing mode of collecting tolls without traditional toll plazas or tollbooth, according to a news release from the state Department of Transportation.

PennDOT is adding electronic tolling to fulfill customer expectations for seamless, convenient travel, it is safer for drivers and its employees, it is better for the environment, it allows new access points to be added more easily and at a lower cost and it will help save the Turnpike more than $75 million a year.
