Richard J. “Rick” Hertz, 85, of Butler, passed away peacefully with his family, special companion, and his beloved dog, Molly, by his side on Friday, April 28, 2023, at his home.

He was born Aug. 5, 1937, in Butler, the son of the late Frank and Josephine “Rothen” Hertz.

Rick was a member of the St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, the Meridian Vets Club, and American Legion Post 117. He was a graduate of Butler High School and obtained his electrical engineering degree from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. In addition, he received a diploma from Bell & Howell Electronics School.

He retired from Westinghouse as a senior electrical engineer.

He served his country as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army while stationed in Germany. He enjoyed reading books, woodworking, crossword puzzles, building R/C airplanes, and spending time in his vineyard and with his granddaughters.

Surviving are his three sons, Michael Hertz of Butler, Anthony (Kellie) Hertz of Butler, and Stephen (Sherry) Hertz of Lewisberry; two granddaughters, Brianna and Abbey Hertz; his special companion, Karen Myers of Butler; and a brother, Ken Hertz of Maryland.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ann (Alberti) Hertz; son, Christopher Hertz; and a brother, Robert Hertz.

HERTZ — Friends and family of Richard J. “Rick” Hertz, who died Friday, April 28, 2023, will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at YOUNG FUNERAL HOME, 127 W. Jefferson St., Butler.

Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, 127 Franklin St., Butler, followed by a burial in the St. Peter Cemetery, Butler.

Military honors will be accorded at graveside.
