Gertrude Klingensmith

Klingensmith

Gertrude C. Klingensmith, 101, of Butler, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at her home at New Haven Court. She was a proud mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, as well as a friend to many.

Born July 5, 1921, in Pittsburgh, she was one of nine children of her parents, Stanley John Janicki and Laura (Kempenski) Janicki. Her family moved to Butler when Gertrude was 5 years old, which remained her home for the rest of her 101 years.

Gertrude had an endless amount of energy and loved to work. She enjoyed a 10-year stint in food care at the Butler VA Hospital, as well as another 10-year career as a Real Estate agent. Following that, Gertrude and her husband, Jack, built and operated The Homestead Restaurant in Prospect. She truly loved the restaurant business and successfully carried that out for another 10 years.

Gertrude was a faithful attendee of Meridian United Presbyterian Church for many years and was truly loved by many there. She always occupied the back row aisle seat so that she was able to greet everyone as they walked in. Gertrude was also a ballroom dancer and golfer, as well as a proud and amazing mother to her four children. She was a popular figure in her hometown of Butler and will be sorely missed by many.

Gertrude is survived by a son, Jack Klingensmith, as well as a daughter, Patricia Nikolauyk, both of Butler. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, as well as several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jack W. Klingensmith, who passed in 2003; two daughters, Jeanette Hartos of Monroeville and Sandra Missroon of Atlanta, Ga.; as well as two grandchildren.

The family is very grateful and would like to thank the staff of New Haven Court in Butler, Pa., for their amazing care and support for Gertrude in her final months.
