Mary MacDonald

MacDonald

Mary Kathryn MacDonald (Bandura) passed away at home in Rochester Hills, Mich., on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, two days before her 88th birthday.

Mary K. graduated from Butler High School in 1953, where she met her high school sweetheart, Don. They married in 1957 and moved from Pennsylvania to Detroit, Mich., where they built their home and grew their family. She pursued her passion of educating young children, earning a degree in early childhood development from Wayne State University. She eventually retired as the director of North Hills Childcare Center in 1994, starting her second career as full-time grandmother.

Mary K. was the family’s “original jet-setter,” catching the travel bug early in life. She enjoyed flying coast to coast visiting friends, sailing the Georgian Bay, and traveling to dream destinations including Hawaii and Okinawa, Japan. In 1970, she bought Don his first flying lesson for Christmas — leading both of them to cultivate their love for adventure and the wonderful friendships made through aviation.

She enjoyed curating her artisan doll collection and was an active member of University Presbyterian Church, where she was a wedding planner and a deacon. She was a gentle, joyful and loving wife, as well as a sister, mother, grandmother and dear friend to many.

Mary K. is survived by her husband of 65 years; her children, Scott (Aranya) MacDonald and Sharon (Thomas) Moyer; her siblings, Patricia (Ronald) McLaren, Yvonne (David) Stehle and Carl Jr. (Debbie) Rose; her seven grandchildren; and her three great-grandchildren.
