Police: Man rented out customers’ vehicles instead of fixing them

A Cranberry Township man has been charged with driving and renting out his customers’ cars without their permission instead of repairing them, police said.

Keith R. Smith, 66, was charged Monday with felony fraud, six counts of misdemeanor theft and unauthorized use of motor vehicle and two counts of misdemeanor unlawful business practice in a series of incidents spanning from August 2022 to January.

Smith operated a repair business called Oilology in the township. Police said in an affidavit that Smith was renting out the customers’ vehicles and driving them without permission.

In July 2022, a customer dropped off his 2011 Acura TSX for repairs, as the check engine light was on, police said. When the vehicle was returned to the customer, the check engine light still was on and additional miles were recorded on the car’s odometer.

The customer brought the car back to Oilology in October for the check engine light. According to documents, he received the car back in January. A total of 4,688 miles had been added to the car from those instances.

Additionally, two dents on the vehicle’s driver’s side were found after the car was in Smith’s possession, police said. The customer paid $1,365 for work that never was done.

Another customer told police she brought her 2017 Ford Taurus to Smith for repairs in October 2022. She received her car back four months later with an additional 1,333 miles on it. The customer said she paid $954 to Smith for repairs that were never done, police said.

In total, Smith is being accused of taking $8,613 from customers for repairs.
