Samuel R. “Sam” Rea, 80, of Slippery Rock, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, at Allegheny General Hospital.

Sam was born on Oct. 22, 1942, in Grove City, and was the son of Burton and Nellie Knight Rea.

He graduated from Slippery Rock High School in 1961.

Sam drove a truck for many years for multiple local companies. He also helped coach Slippery Rock girls softball and the youth football program, both for 10 years.

He was an avid outdoorsman, who hunted with his sons and grandsons. He followed all of his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, and never missed a game.

Sam was a member of the Slippery Rock United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, C. Burdene “Dene”; one daughter, Cara; three sons, Brian (Kellie), Bruce (Debby) and Barry (Maria); his grandchildren, Spencer (Ashley), Brandon (Haylie), Alyssa and Kole; two half sisters, Lois Cross and Susan (Mark) Hohman; a half brother, Steve (Sue) Rea; a number of nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Helen Spencer.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Crosby and Edna Spencer; and a brother-in-law, Rodney Spencer.

REA — As per his wishes, there will be no visitation or services for Samuel R. “Sam” Rea, who died Wednesday, March 15, 2023.

Arrangements were entrusted to the JAY BRYAN FUNERAL HOME in Prospect.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Department.
