New board member chosen for Slippery Rock Area School District
An “involved” parent was chosen Monday, March 13, to fill a vacant seat on the Slippery Rock Area School District’s board.
The board approved Jessica Twentier, of Harrisville, in a 6-1 vote to fill the Region I seat that was vacated in February by Randy Geisler.
“She is involved in the Parent Teacher Organization and youth sports and will be an asset to this board,” superintendent Alfonso Angelucci said.
Angelucci said the board last month accepted the resignation of Geisler, who is to become a substitute teacher. He had been on the board since last year. His resignation was effective Feb. 9.
A special meeting was held March 8 to interview candidates.
“It is difficult to choose when there are so many good candidates. She (Twentier) will be an asset to this board,” said school board president Vito Pilosi III.
Twentier was appointed to fill the role until the first Monday in December.
The board discussed Monday how it would use approximately $33,000 the district received as part of settlement of a class-action suit against electronic cigarette maker Juul Labs.
According to Angelucci, the funds will go to addiction prevention.
“(The district) hopes to dedicate 100% to prevention programs for the high school, middle school, and maybe even the elementary school,” Angelucci said.
The Athletic Department reported intentions to have better athletic trainer coverage at events, and that information is being gathered regarding financing and fundraising for the field house.
Invited guest and fifth-grade teacher at Moraine Elementary School Amy Jeffcoat and two of her student members of the Moraine Wellness Team highlighted efforts to hold events to encourage students to live a healthy lifestyle. The team is 10 members strong, and the application process for the upcoming school year will begin soon.
