Summit Township spending federal funds on Mack Truck

SUMMIT TWP — Supervisors are using the last of the township’s American Rescue Plan Act funds to purchase a new Mack Truck for multiple maintenance uses. The township initially received $460,428 in ARP funding.

Supervisors voted at a meeting Wednesday, March 1, to use the last of its approximately $15,000 in ARP money toward the purchase a 2024 Mack Truck. The township previously moved about $130,000 from its ARP funds to the general fund for the truck’s chassis. Supervisor Larry Osche said the truck will be used for snow plowing, salting roads, performing drainage work on roads and more.

In a 2-1 vote, the supervisors also accepted a $6,000 price increase from the truck's seller, which was necessary because of the increase in costs for materials, according to Osche. Supervisor chairman Willie Adams was the dissenting vote.

The total cost of the truck is nearly $220,000, and the supervisors ordered it in December 2021.

“One of the reasons it costs so much is because it’s a 2024,” said supervisor Richard Green.

The supervisors also voted to send township secretary Roxann Stickney to a conference regarding opportunities to apply for money from PENNVEST, the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority. The conference is free to attend, and one of the supervisors may attend alongside Stickney.

“PENNVEST, that’s where we’re looking for funding for the sewer, so that would be a good idea,” Adams said.
