John Gerwig Sr.

John L. Gerwig Sr., 86, of Harmony, peacefully passed away on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2023, at home.

He was born in Ellwood City on Jan. 17, 1937, the son of the late Charles and Mary (Cooper) Gerwig.

John graduated from Evans City High School and then went on to be a truck driver and diesel mechanic until he retired in 2004. John was known for being a loving and great husband and father, as well as hardworking, with a great sense of humor. He was in the Country Campers Group and also active in Troop 360 Boy Scouts, and he attended Burry’s Church for over 62 years.

John was the beloved husband of Judy (Allmann) Gerwig, since their marriage on Aug. 18, 1962; father of John (Cindy) Gerwig Jr., Chuck (Brolene) Gerwig and Dave (Carol) Gerwig; grandfather of nine; and great-grandfather of nine. He is also survived by a large and loving family.

John was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald Gerwig, who died in Vietnam.

GERWIG — Family and friends of John L. Gerwig Sr., who died Thursday, Feb. 23, 2023, will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in St. John’s “Burry’s” United Evangelical Protestant Church, 1835 Route 68 Rochester, Pa.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Burry's Church or Good Samaritan Hospice.
