Drug Task Force busts felon with stamp bags, gun

A Butler man was charged with four crimes after being tackled and arrested by officers with the county Drug Task Force on Wednesday.

Charles Joseph Perkins, 28, faces charges of evading arrest on foot, possession of a controlled substance, possessing a firearm as a felon and receiving stolen property.

According to court documents, two officers with the task force were preparing a warrant to search a West Jefferson Street apartment, which they had under surveillance for possible drug activity.

Perkins was named in the warrant as a person to be searched in the investigation at the apartment.

Just as the on-call district judge signed the warrant, the officers observed surveillance footage showing multiple people leaving the West Jefferson Street apartment on foot, including Perkins, according to documents.

The officers attempted to stop and detain Perkins in the area of West Birch and South Church streets, but he took off running as they approached, according to documents.

The officers said that they saw Perkins reach into his waistband and toss a handgun as he fled.

Perkins fell a short time later and was apprehended by police, who then found the .45 caliber Colt handgun, according to documents.

Perkins was held at the Butler City Police station until the search warrant was executed and the search of the apartment was completed.

A search of Perkins revealed he was in possession of seven stamp bags of suspected heroin, two cellphones and $192, according to documents.

A record check showed that the Colt was reported stolen by state police at Troop D in Butler, and that Perkins is a convicted felon and cannot possess a firearm.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 13 before District Judge William Fullerton in Butler.

He remains in the Butler County Prison on $250,000 bail.
