Man charged for driving truck on golf course
A Butler man is facing DUI charges for taking a drive on the back nine of Butler Country Club last month.
Penn Township police charged Jeffrey D. Gill, 59, with two counts of misdemeanor DUI and summaries property damage and careless driving as a result of the Dec. 17 incident.
According to charging documents, officers were dispatched to the country club for a vehicle driving across the fairways. A second caller reported sometime later that the vehicle had left the course and was in the parking lot of the club.
The manager of the country club told police upon arrival that the driver had not entered the club. Officers said they found the vehicle in the parking lot and spotted the driver staggering into the club.
The driver was identified as Gill, who told police his “GPS had him lost” on his way to a Christmas party and that’s why he drove on the fairway, according to charging documents.
Police said Gill showed signs of impairment, and that Gill’s breath test showed positive for alcohol. When asked if he’d consumed alcohol prior to driving, he initially told officers he’d had two beers. He later changed his answer to four beers, police said.
Gill was taken into custody for driving under the influence and had his breath tested again. The test showed Gill’s blood-alcohol content at 0.125%, police said. In Pennsylvania, the legal limit is 0.08%.
Gill was released from police custody shortly thereafter.
Police said the golf course was assessed by a groundskeeper, who reported that the extent of the damage may not be realized until spring.
A preliminary hearing for Gill has not yet been scheduled.
