Bonner, others continue fight to impeach Philly D.A.

Tim Bonner

As the back-and-forth continues between Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner and legislators trying to impeach him, a state representative from Butler County remains involved.

State Rep. Tim Bonner, R-17th, with his fellow House impeachment manager, state Rep. Craig Williams, R-160th, have filed a response to Krasner’s petition to stop the upcoming Senate impeachment trial before it begins.

Several legislators claim Krasner must be impeached due to the Krasner’s loss of or failure to prosecute violent crime cases, a substantial increase in crime in Philadelphia resulting from Krasner’s mismanagement, an increase in gun violence in the city and other failures.

Krasner claims the action is partisan, and Republicans are weaponizing the state constitution.

He filed a legal petition against what he claims is an unlawful impeachment, saying the court system, not the Legislature, is the place to determine whether he should be impeached.

Krasner petitioned Commonwealth Court in an effort have the impeachment proceedings in the General Assembly dismissed.

Earlier this week, Bonner and Williams filed a response to Krasner’s petition through their attorneys and filed preliminary objections to dismiss the petition.

Bonner and Williams maintain the impeachment trial scheduled for Jan. 18 in the Senate should move forward.

The legislators claim the state constitution supports their position.

But Krasner also said the constitution upholds his position that the trial should be held in Commonwealth Court.

“He and his office have lied to courts and to a grand jury,” Bonner said in the news release Wednesday. “He has been held in contempt by an overwhelming bipartisan majority of House members for refusing to respond to a House committee’s subpoenas.

“This is not about politics or the outcome of an election, but rather his unethical and unlawful behavior.”
