Sarah Hayden

Hayden

Sarah Elizabeth Hayden, 91, passed away on Monday, Dec. 12, 2022, at Green Hill Senior Living Center in West Orange, N.J. Sarah, who went by Sally, was born in Mahaffey, Pa., the third child of the late Jesse and S. Ruth (Weaver) Hutton. She grew up on a farm in rural Clearfield County, Pa., in the midst of the Great Depression and World War II.

With a degree in business education from State Teachers College At Indiana (forerunner of Indiana University of Pennsylvania) and a master's degree in counseling from Penn State University, Sally worked in public schools for nearly 30 years, including 15 years in the Butler Area School District as an elementary school and high school guidance counselor. She also taught in Illinois, Massachusetts, Texas, Oklahoma, Morocco, England and West Germany. She loved the outdoors and was an enthusiastic backpacker, camper, bicyclist and gardener.

Sally gave her two children a stable and happy childhood in Butler, delighting in taking them on trips to visit historically and culturally important places throughout the country, and encouraging them to aim high academically. She and her children were members of St. Andrews United Presbyterian Church in Butler, where she served as a deacon. Sally lived in Butler for 30 years, moving to New Jersey in 2006 to be near her children, both of whom had become New Jersey residents.

Throughout her life, Sally went out of her way to maintain close family ties and nurture friendships with people she met in places all over the world in all phases of her life. She reliably demonstrated a sense of service and devotion to the sick and elderly by consistently taking the time to visit friends, relatives and members of her church who were shut-ins or confined to hospitals and nursing facilities. Sally always had a tender heart for people who had been dealt a bad hand in life, particularly children. This is why she became a school counselor.

Sally is survived by her daughter, Deborah Hayden Juergensen of Montclair, N.J.; her son, Lee L. Hayden IV and wife, Kathy-Jo, of Randolph, N.J.; her sister, Ruthanne Atkinson of Elgin, Ill.; granddaughters, Zoe, Kate and Sabrina Juergensen; and grandsons, William and Maxwell Hayden.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Hutton and Frank Hutton.
