Edward Francis Sommers, 78, passed away at his residence in Harrisville, surrounded by family on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2022.

Ed was born in Pittsburgh on Dec. 12, 1943, to James Michael Sommers Sr., and Margaret D. McGarvey Sommers.

He married Bette Joan Melvin on Jan. 19, 1963. She survives.

Ed was a member of Iron Workers Local 3 for over 50 years.

He was a member of St. Faustina Parish and worshipped at St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church in Forestville.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling with his wife. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Bette at home; his sons, Michael Edward Sommers of Oceanside, Calif.; his daughter, Kathleen E. Sommers of Butler; his son, Patrick S. (Julie) Sommers of New Wilmington; two brothers, James Michael Sommers Jr. of San Diego, Calif., and Thomas John Sommers of Portersville; eight grandchildren, Chelsea, Jamie, Riley, Darrien, Carly, Richie, Cullen and Ethan; four great-grandchildren, Silas, Stella, Nova and Saylor; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Patrick, Larry, and recently Bill; his sister, Helen “Peach” Forsmark; his twin sister, “Peggy” Cokus, and his sister, Alice Lyon; and his great-grandson, Myles Edward Sommers.

SOMMERS — The family of Edward Francis Sommers, who died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2022, will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Faustina Parish, St. Anthony Church, 232 Boyers Road, Harrisville, with Father Adam Verona presiding.

Interment will be in St. Anthony Cemetery, Harrisville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
