Drop-in center to augment Seneca Valley cyber school

JACKSON TWP — Students attending the Seneca Valley Academy of Choice will have a drop-in center in Cranberry Township to meet with teachers, attend a gym class, participate in an enrichment activity, and much more.

The school board at its Monday night meeting approved the Cyber Drop-In Center, which will be on Executive Drive beside Butler County Community College’s Cranberry Township campus.

Linda Andreassi, the district’s director of communications, said a survey was sent in October to all 2,000 academy families to get input on what activities or programs they would like to see at the drop-in center.

She said all 28 academy teachers will move their offices to the drop-in center, while secondary teachers will toggle between the secondary campus and drop-in center to accommodate students who attend classes both at school and the cyber academy.

Academy students in kindergarten through grade 12 can use the drop-in center.

Denise Manganello, academy principal, said tutoring; intervention; science, technology, engineering and math activities; enrichment activities; physical education classes and other programs will be held at the drop-in center.

“We’ll have an area for students who don’t feel comfortable coming into our large buildings,” Manganello said.

The facility will serve as a true drop-in center, where students will spend an hour or so before returning home.

Andreassi said parents appreciate the drop-in center being in Cranberry Township, so they will no longer have to drive their students to the secondary campus in Jackson Township.

“’Education customized for you’ is our mantra,” Manganello said of the academy. “Now we can even provide more customization with this space.”

The cyber academy was initiated 15 years ago with 36 students, and Manganello said the school board has been supportive of the program since that time.

“I’m excited,” she said. “I think this will be our next adventure.”

Manganello said the drop-in center should be open by mid-January.
