14-year-old suspected in Mercer County homicide

A 14-year-old juvenile male is being held in a detention center after state police found him in a stolen van with a gun.

The owner of the vehicle, a 71-year-old man from Euclid, Ohio, was found dead shortly after, according to a news release from Pennsylvania State Police in Mercer County.

At about 8:16 p.m. Saturday, police said they initiated a traffic stop for a van on Interstate 80 East in Findley Township, Mercer County. The 14-year-old driver was found to have a handgun in the vehicle, police said, and numerous indicators of criminal activity were observed before and during the stop.

According to the release, police attempted to contact the owner of the van and were unsuccessful. The Euclid Police department was requested by state police to respond to the owner’s residence, where he was found to be dead with gunshot wounds.

The name of the victim has not been released.

Members of Pennsylvania state police, the Pennsylvania District Attorney’s office, the City of Euclid, Ohio, police department and the Cuyahoga County, Ohio District Attorney’s office are conducting a joint investigation.
