Vets blocked in parking lot

BUTLER TWP — Due to the large turnout at the Stand Down event at General Butler Vagabonds Center in Lyndora, many veterans who attended to access services and goods were told to park behind nearby Sherwood Lanes and walk to the hall.

Veterans reported to Stand Down organizers that a man, who said he was from Sherwood Lanes, was shouting at motorists for parking in the lot during the event.

That individual, who did not identify himself, then parked a pickup truck in the access lane to the bowling alley’s rear gravel parking lot so those who had parked there to attend the Stand Down event could not leave.

The event hosted more than 50 vendors, where veterans could learn about services available to them. Veterans also received various items — like coats, socks, boots and blankets — at Stand Down.

The man at Sherwood Lanes told the Eagle the parking lot is for customers.

A woman at the bar inside Sherwood Lanes said the business was neither told of the Stand Down event nor asked if those attending could park there.

The man eventually moved his truck, allowing veterans who had attended Stand Down to exit.
