SNAP scam messages circulating

A new texting scam regarding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program has been circulating Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania Department of Human Services acting secretary Meg Snead said individuals have been receiving text messages from a “[number]@dhs.pa.gov,” indicating that there is an issue with the text recipient’s EBT card. A Friday news release said the department will never ask for information about an EBT card, SNAP or any other public assistance programs via unsolicited or random calls or text.

DHS does send informational text messages to people who receive SNAP and other benefits from the number 1-833-648-1964, but those messages would not request any personal information from the recipient, the news release said.

The news release asked that people report any texts or calls that seem suspicious by calling the DHS fraud tipline at 1-844-347-8477.
